We signed up for a trip with APT many months ago. The preparation blog explains much of the plan.
We flew from the Gold Coast to Sydney and things all went well. Then there was an emergency at Sydney Airport that caused us a five hour delay.

We drove from Coober Pedy to William Creek and flew to Birdsville across Lake Eyre. There had been some concern that recent rain might have left the Oodnadatta Track impassable, but APT head office gave us the goahead, and apart from a few deep puddles we made it fine.
